French

Intent

The aim is to develop confidence and competence in French, with pupils becoming passionate, curious and confident about their MFL learning abilities by the time they leave primary school.

Key skills pupils will develop:

  • Confidence to reflect on their own experiences and concepts explored
  • The ability to actively apply their understanding and empathy of different languages
  • The ability to enquire and have a deeper understanding of the diverse range of languages and cultures across the world
  • Curiosity about languages
  • Working collaboratively to develop resilience
  • Finding different ways to think about things to help them learn

Implementation

French is taught mainly through oral and listening activities using the Language Angels scheme of work, which uses songs, games and activities to engage children through an interactive approach. Each topic has a series of lessons which build language through set themes, with language recapped at the beginning of each lesson using various retrieval practice methods. French Subject report 2025-2026

Language Angels helps ensure development of the 4 main areas of language (speaking, listening, reading and writing), with the scheme focusing primarily on speaking, listening and reading, whilst further progress through writing can be used.

Impact

Teachers assess children's progress throughout each lesson from their oral recall and understanding. At the end of each unit, teachers use an assessment generated by Language Angels that children complete, giving teachers a greater understanding of the overall progress made across the unit of work.

The teaching of French is monitored through review of book looks, pupil and teacher conferencing and lesson drop-ins and observations. The Language Angels programme is also reviewed to ensure progress of knowledge and skills being taught across Key Stage 2.

Staff confidence has increased in the teaching of modern foreign languages, with continued building on French language teaching using Language Angels, ensuring lessons are progressive and build on prior knowledge.

Fundamental British Values in French

Children have the opportunity to understand different cultures through the language taught and also have respect for different cultures.

This promotes:

  • Mutual respect and tolerance – through developing understanding of and respect for different cultures
  • Individual liberty – pupils develop bravery and confidence in trying a new language
  • Democracy – through collaborative working where pupils share ideas and learn together
